Pelagic Trips And Deep Water Expeditions
The mission of the Buena Vista Audubon Society (BVAS) is to help educate the public on important conservation issues, to influence public policy and programs in order to better protect the natural environment, and to actively support programs to protect, preserve, restore, and enhance natural ecosystems.
One of the ways we help educate and influence public policy is by sponsoring and organizing birding field trips.
Buena Vista Audubon board member Terry Hunefeld began pelagic birding after moving his family to California in 1998 as CEO of a national training company headquartered in Carlsbad.
As a member of the board of directors of Buena Vista Audubon (BVAS) and compiler for the Oceanside Christmas Bird Count, Terry began to research charters in an effort to sponsor more pelagic trips from San Diego. The website SoCalBirding.com was formed to serve as an information website of all SoCal Pelagic trips departing from San Diego to Santa Barbara.
BVAS now owns and operates this information website, charters boats, and sponsors pelagic trips from San Diego and Oceanside. Terry Hunefeld volunteers his time to maintain this site and charter pelagic trips on behalf of BVAS.
Birding the Grand CanyonBetween 2002 and 2007, Terry's 3 best friends died while still in their 50’s. Feeling as if he were buried alive behind drywall, Hunefeld retired at age 55 in April, 2007 to follow his bliss – birding.
Ann Dunham in the Bed and BreakfastTerry and his wife Ann Dunham (well, Ann mostly) operate the SeaBreeze-Inn Bed & Breakfast in the coastal community of Leucadia, a neighborhood in the north county town of Encinitas. Clean, fresh rooms with an ocean view, including a phenomenal breakfast, are available from $130 a night.
